Looking straight down onto a court of pale honed stone. Two inlaid lines of brushed steel cross it off centre. A handful of low polished steel drums stand in the larger field with short shadows; one stands a little apart, and its top is carnelian glass. A still pool of deep royal blue cuts into one corner.

Stakeholder mapping tool

See who matters, and who nobody is talking to.

The film: the map in 25 seconds, on an illustrative example. It names no real organisation or person.
What the film shows, in words
  1. See who matters, and who nobody is talking to.
  2. Five stakeholders. Three to manage closely.
  3. Four have a next conversation. The water utility has none.
  4. An action. Nobody holds it yet.
  5. An owner. Then a date, in 14 days.
  6. Map the field. Then close the gaps.

Now your own field, and who holds each conversation.

Place each stakeholder by your own judgement of its influence and interest. The map is your plan. It stays on this device unless you ask for the report below.

A stone court open to the sea: two flared travertine piers stand on either side of one inlaid steel line, and a carnelian glass band is set into the pier at the right.
The inlaid line is where “3 or more” falls. A stakeholder on or above it counts as high.

How the map is drawn, and what it cannot tell you.

  1. 01

Influence and interest are scored 1 to 5; 3 or more counts as high.

  2. 02

Groups: manage closely (high, high), keep satisfied (high influence), keep informed (high interest), monitor (low, low).

  3. 03

Influential stakeholders without an action, and actions without an owner or date, are flagged.

  4. 04

A part in the work (institution, buyer or sponsor, learner, operator, oversight, delivery partner) and the access to each stakeholder (verified with a source, claimed only, unknown) are your own labels. They change no group or count. A claimed route, and a buyer or sponsor whose route is not verified, are listed.

A map is a plan; relationships are built in person.

  • Scores and stances are judgements; revisit them as you learn.
  • Record roles and organisations only, never sensitive personal traits.
  • Access is a route to a stakeholder. It gives nobody the power to buy, sign or approve.

The four group names are a rule of thumb for where to spend attention first. They are not advice about any organisation, and a stance is your assumption to test, not a fact.

Quality ruleNo personal sensitive traits; engagement assumptions flagged.

This tool records your own judgement of who matters. If you want help planning the engagement, or doing the groundwork around it, these are the services behind it. Neither promises a meeting, an approval or anyone’s support.
